Chinese character is a complicated but also
interesting language system. We can often hear or see the Chinese character
riddles everywhere. If you can give a quick response to some character riddles,
that means you have reached to a high level in your Chinese character writing.
You
may have already attended many Chinese language courses. And this course is for Chinese character
riddles. Are you ready?
Let’s
start from some simple ones.
“一人(yi4 ren2).” You guess a Chinese character.
I can give you a hint. How about combining “一” and “人”? What character will you get? I will
never tell you the answer is “大(da4)”.
“一人在内(yi4 ren2 zai4 nei4).” Guess a Chinese
character. The solving method is similar to the above. By combining you may get
a “肉(rou4)”. Do you find it is very interesting
to learn to write Chinese in this way?
And
then, we will come to a more complicated one. “一人一张口,口下长只手(yi4 ren2 yi4 zhang1 shou3, kou3 xia4
zhang3 zhi1 shou3)”. By combining “人,口 and 手”, it seems we can not get the answer. Actually,
sometimes we need to change the orders of the parts. So the right answer to it
is “拿(na2)”. The upper part is a “合”. It is consisted of “人(ren2), 一(yi1) and 口(kou3).” And so it is called “一人一张口”. And then, we add a “手” under the “合” and we may get the answer “拿”, which means “take ” in English.
There
are some other riddles which can not be solved only by combination. For example,
“一夜又一夜(yi2 ye4 you4 yi2 ye4)”, guess a character.
By guessing such a kind of riddles, you need to learn to change some
characters. The “夜(ye4)” here can be replaced into “夕(xi1), which is a equivalence to “夜” in Chinese ”. So, we can get a “多(duo1)”——the double “夕”.
